  2. "It has been just over a year now since I made the eventual decision to leave my former employer after eight years and join your client. That move began with your telephone call to me in late November. As another anniversary has recently passed, I wanted to share with you a few thoughts on the recruiting process.

    While at my former employer, I received a minimum of 1-2 calls per week from recruiters across the country trying to recruit me out. That effort by the recruiters actually increased in intensity after we completed a very successful initial public offering raising $40 million. I rebuffed those recruiting offers because: 1) I was happy with a significant equity position, 2) after eight years where I played a significant role in helping to build the business from less than $1 million in revenues to nearly $60 million in revenues, the business had taken a firm grip of me, and 3) the calls from the recruiters were never compelling enough to warrant consideration given the aforementioned items. It was not until you called that I really listened with any sincere interest in another opportunity.

    The reason your call had an impact on me is that the dialogue gave me the feeling of a well thought out recruiting strategy that told me you had intimate personal knowledge of your client and their business. That feeling was later confirmed from the research and homework you presented to me. In addition, the way you described the Company's business model, its growth path, and the overall compensation package for the position also interested me.

    In the next step of the recruiting process, I met with you to discuss the opportunity. After my interview with you, you said my background and personality were a perfect fit the Company and Board. While that was flattering, I discounted those comments as being part of a recruiting sales pitch. I later found out that those comments were sincere and frank. You did not wish to waste the valuable time of the candidate, your client, or yourself. The comments you gave were also most informative. As an example, each time, after the interviews that I had, we would discuss the interviews in depth. The conversations we had after each interview, and the conversations we had after you discussed my interview with the Board, were always most informative and helpful and provided me with strong guidance for the next interview.
